Whitehall in Louisville, Kentucky is a historic house situated on seven acres of land along the banks of the Ohio River. Constructed in 1841 by John and Lucretia Pirtle, it is one of the oldest surviving mansions in Jefferson County. Whitehall is an excellent example of the Greek Revival style at its apex. The exquisite mansion boasts two-stories with four large columns that support a full-width portico – something that was rare at this time period. This stunning structure was featured in Kentucky's first published architectural work, A Concise Account of the Early Architecture of Kentucky, as one of its “four great examples” of Greek Revival architecture.
The interior has many original features including beautiful intricate plasterwork ceilings, a grand main staircase, and carved wooden mantelpieces. The home is decorated with fine furniture from several different eras ranging from late Federal to mid-Victorian styles. In addition to these amazing features, the property also includes a smokehouse, carriage house, and a three-story garden wall made out of brick and stucco constructed by noted garden architect Jens Jensen.
Whitehall served as home for seven generations of Pirtles until 1978 when it was acquired by local preservationists who opened it to the public as part of the Whitehall Museum House . As that museum closed in 2003 , Whitehall underwent a major renovation to bring it back to its former glory and splendor and prepare it for future tours. Today, visitors can explore all aspects of this historic home while learning about its interesting past and unique architecture. Those interested can take guided tours which feature special exhibits such as “From Servants to Socialites” and “Whitehall Through Time” or rent out rooms for private events like weddings or holiday parties!
