Locust Grove in Louisville is a unique and beautiful cultural site. It was the home of George Rogers Clark, Revolutionary War hero and founder of Kentucky, from 1785 until his death in 1818. Constructed around 1790, the Federal-style house is surrounded by 60 acres of gently rolling hills and forests. The site includes an outbuilding complex with several structures that served as a distillery, smokehouse, kitchen, barns and other support structures, as well as a reconstructed stone springhouse.
The property was also The B irthplace of William Clark, co-leader of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the western United States. In addition to being historically significant in Kentucky's history, Locust Grove offers visitors many wonderful experiences today.
Visitors can walk through the historic grounds while learning about George Rogers Clark's military career and life at the estate during the early 19th century; tour both indoor and outdoor buildings such as the main house; view period artifacts in an on-site museum; or take part in special events like Lantern Tours or Civil War Encampment days. The lush gardens are popular for weddings or family reunions as well. A gift shop near the visitor center offer souvenirs related to Locust Grove’s history.
On any given day one might find school groups visiting for educational purposes; researchers studying artifacts from archaeological excavations; or amateur historians exploring war artifacts found onsite that date back to George Rogers Clark’s time at Locust Grove. These finds have included musket balls, belt plates and ammunition that have provided valuable insights into daily life at Locust Grove during Revolutionary times.
This National Historic Landmark must be seen to be appreciated!
