Lights Under Louisville is an annual holiday event held in Louisville, Kentucky that has been in existence since 2002. People from all around the city and beyond come together to enjoy a festive light show at the Louisville Mega Cavern, which is located just off of Interstate 65. The Mega Cavern is an underground network of man-made caverns and corridors that stretch beneath parts of the city. After dark, guests can take a drive through the cavern that’s lit up with millions of holiday lights and interactive displays. The light show features bright, colorful designs and decorations that span across almost two miles of track located 30 feet below ground.
The attraction first began when owner Jim Lowry had the idea to convert his limestone mining facility into something fun for people to experience during the holiday season. He decided to bring the idea to life by installing six million Christmas lights all throughout the caves. As years went on, more lights were added until there was enough for a full-scale light show.
Today, Lights Under Louisville is one of Louisville’s most popular attractions during the winter season. Visitors get to drive through over 850 illuminated displays as they make their way around the twisting paths in total darkness. They also get to ride along a half-mile train ride filled with animated characters and festive music playing in the background. In addition, visitors can also take part in some interactive activities such as making crafts or playing miniature golf while they wait for their turn on a carousel or bumper cars ride complete with glowing effects.
