The Farmington Historic Plantation in Louisville, Kentucky is a Southern plantation house dating back to the early 1800s that has been welcoming guests and visitors since the middle of the 20th century. This sprawling estate was once home to the Speed family, who were prominent members of the Louisville community. Today, this unique property is open to the public, allowing people to experience first-hand what life was like during this era of American history.
Farmington Historic Plantation sits on around 30 acres of land and the main house itself dates back to 1816. In its heyday, it was one of only two surviving Federal-style brick homes in Jefferson County and it is thought that architect William Charret designed the building. The original structure has been well preserved over time and today it still retains some of its historic charm with an attached kitchen wing and several magnificent outbuildings situated on either side of a wide lawn, as well as various gardens throughout the property.
In addition to its rich history, Farmington also provides visitors with a variety of cultural activities such as historical reenactments and educational programs. Guests can explore areas such as African-American sites where enslaved people lived at the plantation or take part in more traditional tours which focus on topics such as architecture or Victorian life. Furthermore, those looking to enjoy more leisurely activities can take advantage of the many walking trails throughout the grounds or go horseback riding through a nearby forest.
Although Farmington is no longer inhabited by any relatives of its former owner's family, their history still lives on within these walls thanks to a series of displays dedicated to them which feature period clothing and furniture from this era. Aside from offering an unparalleled opportunity for visitors to learn about 19th Century life and culture, Farmington Historic Plantation also provides a beautiful backdrop for weddings or other special occasions with its lush gardens and grand event spaces located within some of its outbuildings.
