Cave Hill Cemetery & Arboretum in Louisville, Kentucky is a beautiful and tranquil place to visit. The cemetery was established in 1848 and the arboretum was added in 1971. The cemetery spans over 300 acres and contains approximately 120,000 graves, making it one of the largest cemeteries in the United States. It has served as a resting place for many prominent figures from Louisville as well as some notable national figures like Colonel Harland Sanders, who founded Kentucky Fried Chicken.
The grounds are filled with an array of wildlife including birds, squirrels, rabbits and even deer that often wander through the grounds. There are also numerous trees, shrubs and flowers that fill the area with color throughout the year. In addition to providing a peaceful space for visitors to pay their respects to their loved ones, Cave Hill Cemetery & Arboretum offers educational programs such as birding classes, environmental tours and nature walks.
The grounds feature two picturesque lakes called Marlowe Lake and Swan Lake that provide a great spot for exploring or just relaxing. In addition to these two lakes there are numerous statues located around the grounds including sculptures of Confederate soldiers as well as memorials dedicated to fallen soldiers from wars ranging from World War I to Vietnam.
There are also several monuments scattered throughout including a replica of Abraham Lincoln's tombstone which was given by Robert Todd Lincoln in 1916. This monument is perhaps one of the most popular attractions at Cave Hill Cemetery & Arboretum due to its historical significance. As you walk through this peaceful sanctuary you can't help but be moved by its beauty and solemnity at every turn. It truly is an unforgettable experience.
