Bullitt Estate is one of Louisville’s most celebrated historic homes and is a beloved treasure to the city. Located in St. Matthews, the estate has a long and distinguished history that dates back to the 1700s. This expansive property encompasses more than 20 acres of lush lawns, gardens, and woodlands. It was originally owned by Thomas Bullitt who came to the area in 1773 after being commissioned by the Virginia colony to survey western land grants.
The main house at Bullitt Estate features an impressive two-story Federal style residence that was constructed between 1802 and 1805. The interior design displays distinct Georgian architecture with its symmetrical wings and grand central staircase. Notable details include hand-crafted hardwood floors, tall windows for ample natural light, multiple fireplaces, detailed plasterwork, and neoclassical mantels with carved wooden details.
The grounds of Bullitt Estate are equally as captivating as its stately home. Visitors can explore the many paths that wind through flower beds, shrubs, fruit trees, lawns, ponds, woodland borders and stone walls while admiring breathtaking views of downtown Louisville in the distance. There is even a secret garden on site that features winding pathways along with rose-covered arbors and trellises clustered around an enchanting fountain at its center.
Aside from its picturesque setting and distinguished history, Bullitt Estate also houses period furnishings including late 18th century Chippendale chairs and a circa 1790 grandfather clock among other antiques from the era when it was first built. Furthermore, this estate has been designated as a National Historic Landmark since 1966 due to its significance in local history and architectural importance as well as its unique place within American culture as one of few remaining examples of early tidewater architecture in Kentucky.
Today Bullitt Estate remains an important piece of Louisville’s past but also serves as a popular destination for weddings and special events alike due to its natural beauty and serene setting among the rolling hills overlooking downtown Louisville’s skyline. With so much to offer visitors can truly appreciate all that this historic home has to offer while stepping back into time at this magnificent estate tucked away in St Matthews just outside of Louisville proper
