Big Four Bridge Louisville is an iconic pedestrian and bike bridge in the city of Louisville, Kentucky. Located on the banks of the Ohio River, it spans 1,000 feet across to connect the cities of Jeffersonville, Indiana and Louisville. The bridge was originally built during 1895-1896 as a railroad bridge used by the “Big Four” railroads: Cincinnati Southern Railway (CS), Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N), Monon Railroad (M) and Southern Railway (S). It was retired from rail service in 1969 when the new double-track Sherman Minton Bridge opened downstream.
The bridge was idle for over two decades until 1992 when its potential as a public crossing gained traction and the City of Jeffersonville received two grants from INDOT and a loan from US Department of Transportation to turn it into a walkway/bike path. In 1995, through joint efforts of Jeffersonville Redevelopment Commission, City of Jeffersonville, City of Louisville and National Park Service, Big Four Bridge finally opened to pedestrian traffic.
Today locals as well as visitors enjoy this unique urban park experience with spectacular views of downtown Louisville skyline and beyond. The trailhead leads up steeply towards the top deck where one can find benches that are perfect spot to rest or just take photos while admiring stunning views at sunset or night time. After reaching midpoint there's an observation deck which is accessible via stairs or elevator so that everyone can enjoy same degree of panoramic beauty regardless physical ability. On either side there are recessed windows which offer even more breathtaking views along with rest areas found throughout length of walk/ride providing plenty places to take a break during longer trips.
In addition to majestic landscape around it Big Four Bridge also features several interactive exhibits like plaques detailing history behind its name or small art shows hosted by local artists on second floor along with ongoing events such as full moon walks or early morning yoga sessions for those who seek special ways to experience beauty this bridge offers every day.
Big Four Bridge has become integral part of lives for many area residents who use it daily for commuting purposes but just like in beginning it still offers much more than just transportation link between two states thanks to various recreational activities available here all year round combined with unparalleled natural beauty providing plenty opportunities for memorable experiences one will be unlikely to forget anytime soon.
