The Old Los Angeles Zoo in Los Angeles was a popular place for both locals and visitors alike. Located at the heart of Griffith Park, this zoo was home to many exotic animals from around the world. It was first opened in 1966 and had over 1,150 animals from 250 different species including elephants, tigers, lions, giraffes, deer and much more. This zoo also featured exhibits of native Californian wildlife such as sea lions, otters and condors. It also included an aviary with many large birds including peacocks, flamingos, macaws and other colorful feathered friends.
Not only did the Old Los Angeles Zoo house these amazing creatures but it was also a great place to hang out or take a leisurely stroll amongst its lush greenery. It featured numerous picnic areas where visitors could take in the wonderful views of the city skyline as well as some of LA’s most famous landmarks such as The Hollywood Sign, The Griffith Observatory and The Walt Disney Concert Hall.
After its closure in 1965, the space has been transformed into an open air facility that is now home to a variety of activities for people to enjoy such as outdoor concerts and festivals throughout the year along with educational programs about animals where visitors can learn about their habitat preservation efforts.
Although it is no longer there, it will always remain a fond memory for those who visited this beloved institution during its time here in Los Angeles.
