Dockweiler Beach is a 3.5-mile (5.6 km) long beach in Los Angeles, California, United States. The beach is on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and is operated by the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors. It is adjacent to the city's Playa del Rey neighborhood. Dockweiler Beach is named after Harold Henry Dockweiler (1898-1962), a prominent Californian politician who served in the State Assembly, State Senate, and as a Los Angeles Superior Court judge. He was also the chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1940 to 1943. The beach was originally part of Venice Beach, but it broke away in 1909 when a channel was dredged through the area for shipping purposes.
The beach became a separate entity in 1911 when the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners approved its creation. Dockweiler Beach has been popular with Angelenos since its inception, as it is one of the few beaches in the area that allows bonfires. The beach also has picnic tables, barbecues, and a playground. It is also a popular spot for hang gliding and kite surfing due to its proximity to LAX. In 2008, Dockweiler Beach was designated as a state historical landmark by the California State Parks Commission.
