In the early 1800s, the Russian-American Company built Fort Elizabeth in Waimea on the island of Kauai. The fort was used to store supplies and protect Russian interests on the island. In 1815, the fort was attacked by Kauai chiefess Deborah Kapule, but the Russians were able to hold off her forces.
The fort was abandoned in 1817, and eventually fell into ruins. In 1970, the state of Hawaii took over the site and turned it into a state historical park. Today, visitors can see the remains of the fort, as well as a museum with exhibits on the history of the Russian presence in Hawaii.
