London Bridge in Lake Havasu City is an iconic landmark that attracts visitors from around the world. Built in London, England and shipped to Arizona, it is a marvel of engineering and a timeless reminder of the power of human ingenuity. The bridge spans the 1,000-foot wide Bridgewater Channel and connects two sides of Lake Havasu City. Standing at nearly 70 feet tall, it's visible from miles away.
The grand opening of London Bridge took place on October 10th, 1971. It was attended by a variety of dignitaries including Arizona Governor Jack Williams who declared the day “London Bridge Day” for the state. The bridge took three years to construct at its original site before being disassembled into 10,000 pieces and transported to Lake Havasu City via tugboat and barge. Upon arrival, each individual part was numbered so that it could be rebuilt in its new home in Arizona – this process took another three years!
The bridge is made up of five stone arches supported by concrete piers and abutments with granite coping stones forming the outer edges. There are four pedestrian walkways that span across each side of the bridge allowing pedestrians to take in the spectacular views while crossing it. Visitors can also enjoy various activities like fishing off both sides of the bridge or taking boat rides under it for a unique experience.
The structure has become an ambassador for this small desert city located along the Colorado River and has attracted big name events like professional wakeboarding competitions as well as live music performances, making it a popular destination for tourists from all over. As one might imagine due to its age (nearly 50 years old!), significant restoration efforts were required over time to ensure its longevity, but fortunately these efforts have been successful in preserving this majestic piece of history for future generations to come!
