The Brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright, who conceived the first successful powered aircraft, were born in the small midwestern town of Dayton, Ohio in 1871 and 1867 respectively. They had a close-knit family growing up and their father encouraged them to explore their interests in mechanics and engineering. In 1899, when bicycle technology was advancing rapidly, the brothers opened a bicycle shop which further sparked their interest in flight and aviation.

In 1900, the brothers began to conduct experiments on gliders as they believed that if one could master the principles of flight with a glider then applying power would enable powered flight. Over the next few years they tested multiple iterations of gliders to perfect their design before finally taking an interest in motorized aircraft.

In 1903, Wilbur and Orville decided to travel to Kill Devil Hills on North Carolina's Outer Banks for their first attempt at powered flight. The area was chosen due to its strong winds which were thought ideal for their experiment but also kept tourist attention away from what was sure to be an exciting experiment!

On December 17th of the same year, Wilbur piloted the first powered and sustained airplane flight for 12 seconds travelling 120 feet through the air at a speed of 6 miles per hour (9km/h). After four more test flights that day each one increasing in distance or duration but ultimately ending disastrously due to mismanagement by a gust of wind or engine failure, Wilbur continued his experimentation while Orville remained grounded due to illness.

On December 14th 1904, Wilbur succeeded with what is now known as "The First Flight" lasting 59 seconds covering 852 feet (260 meters) at an average speed of 31 mph (50 km/h).
