Bodie Island Lighthouse is located in the town of Kill Devil Hills, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The original tower was built by the U.S. Light-House Establishment in 1847, and it stands 150 feet tall. It is a traditional design with a white conical tower and black lantern room. Bodie Island Lighthouse has been an iconic landmark on the Outer Banks for over 160 years, serving as a beacon of safety and guidance to passing seafarers.
The name “Bodie” comes from the Algonquian Indian word “bodi,” which means “dead man” or “lost land.” This reflects the region’s history with many shipwrecks off its coast due to strong currents and unpredictable weather conditions. In fact, in 1861, Confederate soldiers were stationed at the lighthouse during the Civil War in order to protect it from Union attack.
Today Bodie Island Lighthouse has become a popular sight for tourists visiting Kill Devil Hills. The surrounding area offers beautiful views of both Currituck Sound and Pamlico Sound from atop the lighthouse tower. Visitors can also explore the nearby visitors center and museum where they can learn about various aspects of lighthouse history such as constructing lighthouses using early tools, types of light source used throughout history, how different kinds of lenses work, and much more!
The grounds around Bodie Island Lighthouse are also home to several bird species including Snowy Egrets, Great Blue Herons and Black Skimmer birds who nest in the area between May and September each year. Moreover, thanks to modern technology like solar panels being installed on its roof in 2018, Bodie Island Lighthouse now serves not just as a beacon of navigation but also as an example of modern renewable energy efforts!
