West Martello Tower, also known as the fort East Martello, is a distinctive landmark of Key West, Florida. Built in the early 1860s, it served as a military installation for the Union during the Civil War. The tower has three floors, two of which were used as a storehouse and barracks for Union troops. After being abandoned in 1874, the tower was nearly destroyed by an 1898 hurricane before being restored in the late 1960s. Today, it is operated and maintained by the Key West Garden Club with support from the National Park Service.
The Key West Garden Club formed in 1924 to promote horticulture and beautify Key West's landscapes and public spaces. In 1954 they took over operation of Fort East Martello and began restoring its original features such as battlements and guard towers while planting new tropical vegetation around it. Today visitors can explore the restored fort grounds and take a guided tour that focuses on its history as a Civil War fortification as well as later use by local fisherman for storage. Exhibits inside feature artifacts from its various uses over time including pottery shards from Native American populations who lived there centuries ago—evidence of their presence can still be seen outside in mounds of shells left behind from their meals.
The garden club has done much more than just preserve this historic site though—they have also developed several other tourist attractions such as a butterfly garden filled with tropical species native to Key West, a children’s playground complete with slides and swings, and two walking trails that showcase various natural wonders including mangrove forests and coral reefs teeming with sea life. The club also hosts regular events such at concerts featuring Caribbean musicians or workshops teaching traditional fishing techniques to locals and visitors alike. Their dedication to preserving both history and nature have made them one of the most beloved organizations in Key West today!
