The USCGC Ingham Maritime Museum in Key West, Florida is a world-renowned museum dedicated to preserving the legacy of the United States Coast Guard Cutter Ingham (WPG-35), an iconic warship of World War II. The museum was founded by veterans of the Ingham to honor their shipmates and its significance to American history. The museum features several permanent exhibits and displays showcasing the Ingham’s service during World War II, as well as its role in other significant events such as South Korea's armistice with North Korea in 1953 and the evacuation of Vietnamese refugees from South Vietnam in 1975.
The interactive exhibits provide visitors with a vivid insight into this famous ship's past, including detailed information on its construction, weaponry, crew members and daily life aboard. Through these displays, visitors can gain a better understanding of what it meant to serve aboard this historic vessel. Visitors may even choose to take a virtual tour of the Ingham itself or explore her decks and compartments through interactive multimedia stations that allow them to view photos and hear recordings about the ship's unique history.
The museum also features a library containing more than 800 books about the U.S. Coast Guard Cutters that served during WWII, as well as archival records from when it was first commissioned in 1935 until it was decommissioned in 1944. Additionally, permanent art collections include original sketches by artist Steve Schapiro depicting scenes from WWII battles won by the Cutters; they also depict moments of leisure time spent on board ships or relaxing at port cities around the world.
In addition to its impressive collection of artifacts and displays, The USCGC Ingham Maritime Museum organizes educational programs each year for students ranging from elementary school age through high school seniors. These programs provide students with an opportunity to interact directly with members of their community who served or were affected by WWII, while learning about local maritime heritage and modern military technology used today.
