The Truman Little White House in Key West, Florida is a historic site located near the naval base at the southernmost tip of the United States. Built in 1890, it was originally used as an officer's quarters for the U.S. Navy but was then pressed into service as the winter White House for President Harry S. Truman for 175 days during 11 separate visits between 1946 and 1952. During his stays, President Truman made history by signing several important documents including the charter of NATO and a presidential proclamation that led to the integration of schools throughout America.
This iconic historical landmark has since been preserved and meticulously maintained as a museum open for public tours and special events. As visitors explore this unique structure, they can learn about Truman's life and presidency while also exploring relics from his time in office such as furniture from the Oval Office, original furnishings from Air Force One, artifacts salvaged from the USS Missouri during her decommissioning trip to Key West in 1947, and other items on display throughout the home including personal suitcases that belonged to Truman himself among other belongings that he brought with him on his numerous trips.
In addition to this fascinating collection of treasures, visitors can also take guided tours of its lush grounds which include numerous native plants and trees along with tropical flowers carefully manicured around this two-story property. They can also discover multiple guest houses located onsite, many of which were added after 1945 when they were converted into cabin suites for members of Congress and other high-ranking officials visiting with President Truman during his stays at Little White House Key West.
Though he only stayed here a total of 175 days over six years' time, Harry S. Truman left his mark on America's 45th state — both literally (his autograph remains etched into one of its stone walls) and figuratively (he famously declared Key West as "the best place I've ever come to rest"). Today, more than 70 years after its first use as a presidential retreat, visitors can still experience this historical monument much like it was during its heyday when presidents came here to escape Washington politics and enjoy some downtime in beautiful Key West — all thanks to this National Historic Landmark building we now know today as The Truman Little White House!
