Key West Cemetery is one of the most unique and interesting cemeteries in America. Located in Key West, Florida, this cemetery dates back to 1847 when it first opened. It was initially placed on a two acre plot of land which has since been expanded to 24 acres. There are over 100,000 people buried in the cemetery, many of whom were members of the local Cuban and African-American communities.
The cemetery has an incredibly varied landscape, with a mixture of graves found aboveground as well as belowground. Aboveground graves are typically made out of limestone walls for families or individuals who could not afford more expensive burial options. Many visitors to the cemetery may also find that some graves have been decorated with wrought iron gates and mausoleums. The oldest grave in Key West Cemetery dates back to 1847 and belongs to General John Geddes Flannary, a former mayor of Key West.
Key West Cemetery is also home to a number of famous individuals such as actor Spencer Tracy, author Ernest Hemingway, explorer William Wellsley Brownell, artist Mario Sanchez and even Joseph "Diamond Joe" Lansky among others. Visitors can also spot numerous monuments throughout the cemetery such as the Confederate Monument that pays tribute to those who died during the Civil War or memorials dedicated to those who served in World War I or World War II.
Additionally, many visitors come here just for the unique and eclectic architecture which includes everything from elaborate Greek Revival tombs, Romanesque chapels and Victorian mausoleums that can be seen scattered throughout the grounds.
