Indigenous Park in Key West is a unique public space located at the end of Whitehead Street, near Mallory Square and the Historic Seaport. The park offers a tranquil oasis within the bustling city of Key West, providing a place for thoughtful reflection, contemplation, and recreation.
The park was created in 2010 by community activists and organizations who wanted to honor the indigenous people of the Florida Keys. It features several pieces of sculpture by local artist Attila Lukacs that serve to further commemorate Native American heritage. An impressive memorial arch frames an installation of four figures representing the major groups among native inhabitants: Calusa, Tequesta, Seminole and Bahamian.
The lush tropical landscaping in Indigenous Park invokes native traditions with a variety of endemic species such as Strangler figs, seagrape trees, sea sunflowers, sea lavender and sand live oak—all arranged to create visual pathways leading visitors through the park's winding paths. On any given day one might also find numerous species of birds that stop off at the park while migrating along their route southward every autumn.
In addition to its natural beauty and peacefulness, Indigenous Park also provides recreational activities for children including a playground area featuring slides, swingsets and other outdoor fun structures. There is also an amphitheater for concerts and special events such as movie screenings under the stars or educational talks about local history or wildlife preservation efforts. Visitors may also take advantage of onsite food trucks that offer delicious delectables from around the world throughout much of the year.
Whether you're just looking for some quiet time away from it all or want to spend an afternoon enjoying recreational activities with family and friends, Indigenous Park in Key West is sure to provide plenty of options for relaxation and entertainment alike!
