Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, located in Key West, Florida, is an important part of the state's history. As one of the last remaining Civil War-era fortifications in the United States, it offers a unique glimpse into our past and reminds us of the battles that were fought here. The fort was built between 1845 and 1866 as a defense against foreign military incursions and as a harbor-protection system for ships entering and leaving Key West.
The park is home to a variety of activities that draw many visitors each year. Sunbathing on its white sandy beaches or exploring its nature trails are popular day trips while camping is available for those wishing to stay overnight. There are also several boat tours offering guided fishing charters, picnic lunches and even sunset cruises around the area. Additionally, there are multiple educational programs available to teach visitors about the history of Fort Zachary Taylor as well as local wildlife like sea turtles and dolphins.
This historic site was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1972 due to its significant role in American history. During the Civil War, Fort Zachary Taylor held an important strategic position for Union forces and served as The Headquarters for Admiral David Farragut during his famous campaign against Mobile Bay in 1862. It stayed active until 1947 when it was decommissioned from service by President Harry Truman. Afterward, it became open to the public as part of Florida’s state parks system and has since been renovated to its original appearance with new walls, towers and gun emplacements being constructed based on blueprints from before it closed down.
Today, this national treasure serves both tourists looking for a fun destination or locals searching for some time away from their busy lives. The surrounding area boasts beautiful blue waters ideal for swimming or snorkeling along with interesting historical artifacts such as cannons used during battles at Fort Zachary Taylor itself or sunken ships from centuries ago seen on one of the tour boats that depart from this picturesque spot throughout each day.. Visitors can also enjoy lunch at one of the eateries within walking distance or relax on top of one of massive cannons still located inside the fort walls which provide stunning views of Key West below them
