Rosedale Memorial Arch stands proudly as a symbol of pride, honor, and remembrance in Kansas City. Located in the Rosedale Park district, it has been an iconic landmark for generations and is one of the oldest monuments in the city. The arch was built to commemorate WWI veterans from Kansas City who lost their lives in battle, and it serves as a reminder of their bravery and ultimate sacrifice.
The original design for the monument was created by Clyde N. Jenkins, a local sculptor from Olathe, KS. It features an arched entranceway with four Doric-style columns supporting a rounded arch on each side. The central portion of the arch includes two bronze plaques that are inscribed with the names of local fallen soldiers and details about their sacrifice during WWI. Above this is a large bronze tablet covered with detailed inscriptions celebrating the victory achieved by Allied forces during the war.
The north side of the monument is adorned with several bronze sculptures depicting soldiers from all branches of service who served in World War I. These also represent different nations that contributed to the war effort and remind visitors that people from all over united together to fight for freedom during this difficult time in history.
A walkway wraps around the base of Rosedale Memorial Arch that leads up to an observation deck on top where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the city skyline and surrounding parkland below them. At night, spotlights illuminate from beneath creating a stunning display against city backdrop that can be seen for miles around Kansas City.
Today Rosedale Memorial Arch remains one of Kansas City's most recognizable landmarks and continues to serve as both tribute to those who gave their lives for freedom during WWI and as reminder for present generations to never forget or take lightly what these brave men fought so hard for us to enjoy today – Liberty!
