Ramapo Station was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and was also known as the "Big House" or the "Slave House." It was located in present-day Kansas City, Missouri, on the south side of the Missouri River. The station was operated by abolitionist James Montgomery and his wife, Emily.
The Montgomerys helped many slaves escape to freedom, and Ramapo Station was one of the most successful stops on the Underground Railroad. The Montgomerys were assisted by their friends and fellow abolitionists, including Frederick Douglass.
Ramapo Station was raided by pro-slavery forces several times, but the Montgomerys always managed to help the slaves escape. The last raid occurred in 1859, and after that the station was abandoned.
Today, Ramapo Station is a National Historic Landmark.
