The USS Indianapolis National Memorial is a historic landmark located in Indianapolis, Indiana. It commemorates the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, a United States Navy cruiser that was tragically lost during World War II. The memorial was dedicated in 1995 and pays tribute to the 1,196 crew members who perished when the ship sunk in 1945.
Visitors to the memorial can explore its beautiful grounds which are filled with a variety of monuments and sculptures representing different aspects of the tragedy. At its center stands a 40-foot bronze sculpture depicting an eagle atop a anchor surrounded by 12 dolphins, representing each of the 12 survivors from the sinking. Nearby is a granite wall inscribed with names of all those who lost their lives that night. Other monuments at the site include a granite pedestal topped with a globe and five dove sculptures, symbolizing peace and comfort for those who perished; as well as another pedestal adorned with a replica of an actual life jacket worn by one of the survivors during his rescue at sea.
At certain times throughout the year, visitors can take part in special ceremonies held at the memorial to honor those who were lost on that fateful day. The annual “Remembering Our Heroes” event includes patriotic music performed by local high school bands and rifle salutes by veterans associations and families. Additionally, on days around July 30th (the day when the USS Indianapolis was sunk), bells toll throughout downtown Indianapolis in remembrance.
The purpose and message of this sacred memorial is clear: to forever remember and pay tribute to those brave men and women who lost their lives aboard the USS Indianapolis seventy-five years ago.
