The Indianapolis Cultural Trail, Indianapolis, IN

The Indianapolis Cultural Trail is an 8-mile long urban bike and pedestrian path in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. It connects the city’s five cultural districts—Fountain Square, Indiana Avenue, Mass Ave, The Canal & White River State Park , and Wholesale District—to each other and to popular attractions like Monument Circle and Lucas Oil Stadium.

The trail was a decade-long project funded by the Lilly Endowment and designed by Rundell Ernstberger Associates. It opened in May of 2008 as part of Indianapolis’ Bicentennial celebration. Since its inception it has become one of the most iconic features of the cityscape. The Cultural Trail allows people to travel through the city center with ease while also connecting them to important attractions and destinations.

The trail creates a vibrant public environment along its route with landscaping, artwork, lighting, signage, bicycle racks and more. There are numerous water fountains along its route which offer respite during summer months. This attention to detail means that visitors can take in their surroundings without having to be distracted by street noise or traffic congestion.

Along the Cultural Trail lies two other significant paths; the Central Canal Towpath (CIT) and Monon Trail (MT). The CIT follows the historic canal around downtown Indy while the MT stretches from 10th Street to 96th Street on Indy’s north side.. Both are popular for runners, walkers, cyclists and families who want to explore Indy’s outdoors.

In 2019 the Cultural Trail received national recognition when it was awarded the Urban Land Institute's National Award for Excellence in Urban Design. This award recognizes projects that make a lasting impact on their local communities through innovation and sustainability projects. The jury praised the project for creating an “attractive hub of activity that serves as an exemplar for integrating urban design into infrastructure planning."

In addition to providing convenient transportation options between neighborhoods and attractions within downtown Indianapolis; The Indianapolis Cultural Trail has also become a destination in itself with its vibrant atmosphere of art installations, sculptures, murals, restaurants parks and green spaces running throughout its length. It has enabled citizens living near outlying areas of Indianapolis to access downtown amenities more easily while fostering a greater sense of community among those who reside in or visit this exciting city centre destination!
