The Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Indianapolis, Indiana is a nationally-recognized memorial dedicated to the men and women who sacrificed their lives for the United States of America. The monument was erected in 1902 as a lasting tribute to those who gave their lives during the Civil War. The design of this majestic monument is based on Classical architecture and it stands at 284 feet tall. The base is forty-five feet tall with four bronze sculptures representing Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, and Navy that are arranged around it. Atop the base stands a 125-foot granite obelisk shaft that is topped by a sixteen-foot bronze statue called "Eternal Vigilance." This statue depicts Lady Liberty holding a wreath with her right hand and pointing upward with her left hand, symbolizing hope for peace and freedom.
Inside the base of the monument is a museum devoted to military artifacts from all American wars; there are also plaques honoring military veterans from each conflict since World War I. The grounds surrounding the monument also feature several memorials honoring particular battles or regiments throughout history.
