Garfield Park in Indianapolis is one of the oldest parks in the city, dating back to 1873. It covers over 200 acres and is home to a wide variety of recreational activities including tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer fields, playgrounds, and walking trails. The park also boasts two massive lagoons which provide a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The park was named after President James Garfield who was born in Ohio and went on to become the 20th President of the United States. In recent years, Garfield Park has been undergoing extensive renovations which have revitalized its grounds with lush gardens, tree-lined paths, bike lanes, fitness equipment, decorative lighting and more.
A major highlight for visitors is the Sunken Garden which is an impressive manicured area featuring formal flower beds, elaborate walkways and statuary throughout. It’s a popular place for people to take photos or simply relax while admiring its beauty. The Sunken Garden can be reached by way of two historic bridges - Sullivan Bridge and Central Avenue Bridge - that date back to 1904.
The park has also become home to several summertime events such as outdoor movie nights where families gather to watch films screened on a large inflatable screen located near the lakefront stage beneath the Central Avenue bridge. Music festivals are also hosted at Garfield Park such as the annual Funk Fest which brings together talented funk bands from across the country for a day of dancing fun!
In addition to its recreational activities and vibrant events calendar, Garfield Park provides plenty of educational opportunities as well through interactive programs run by local schools such as “Birds & Bugs” - a program teaching children about nature through hands-on activities like bird watching or bug hunting!
