Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis , Indiana is a great place to visit for both outdoor recreation and historical education. The park is named after President Benjamin Harrison, who was born in the nearby city of North Bend. The 1,700 acre park boasts numerous outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, picnicking, fishing, hunting and more. It was first established by General William Henry Harrison as an army camp during the War of 1812 eventually becoming an official fort in 1818. Over the years it served as an infantry training base during World War I and World War II as well as a major training facility for the Indiana National Guard until 1995 when it was deactivated.
The grounds have since been transformed into a public state park featuring several historic buildings including a 1906 administration building which once served as the fort's headquarters; a 1917 guardhouse; barracks; guardhouses; officers' quarters; mess hall; chapel and much more.
