Washington Place, Honolulu, HI

Washington Place in Honolulu is a National Historic Landmark and state monument located on the corner of Beretania and Richards Streets. It was constructed in 1846 for John Owen Dominis, the governor of Oahu at the time. The house was originally known as Hale Ali'i, which means "home of royalty" in Hawaiian. In 1893, after the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, it served as the residence of Queen Liliuokalani until her death in 1917. She bequeathed it to her former lady-in-waiting Genevieve Parker Macfarlane who then deeded it to the Territory of Hawaii who turned it into a museum in 1922.

The Italianate style home was designed by master builder Levi Chamberlain and features a large central hall with a grand staircase between two residential wings. The unique design also includes an open lānai that wraps around both stories and overlooks a garden courtyard below. Inside one can find original period furnishings, artwork, heirlooms and artifacts from the family’s collection dating from the 19th century onward.

In 1978 Washington Place was listed on both state and national register of historic places due to its significance as a cultural landmark for Hawaii's monarchy. Throughout its history it has been used as an executive mansion for various territorial governors, hosted high society parties, become part of a museum complex, and much more than could fit here! Today visitors can take tours through Washington Place to learn more about its fascinating past while admiring its beautiful architecture up close.
