The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park in Honolulu is a must-see destination for visitors to the Hawaiian Islands. Located on the waterfront of Pearl Harbor , it showcases one of the most famous submarines in history. Built in 1942 and commissioned into the United States Navy in 1943, the Bowfin was used during World War II and earned the nickname “Pearl Harbor Avenger” for its 12 successful war patrols and 24 Japanese ships sunk. After its illustrious career, it was decommissioned in 1971 and now serves as a living memorial to those who served aboard her and all submariners who have defended America’s freedom over the years.
At the museum, guests can explore an authentic WWII submarine that has been restored to look exactly like she did when she first arrived at Pearl Harbor. Visitors are also invited to tour other parts of the more than four-acre site which includes interactive displays, artifacts, photographs, and videos that document submarine history from World War I through present day. Guests can also take part in a simulated dive or join a guided tour of the USS Bowfin. Visiting the museum is an experience filled with excitement as well as educational opportunities -- learning about how technology has evolved throughout naval warfare while being immersed into what life was like onboard a submarine during wartime.
In addition to touring the submarine and museum grounds, guests are encouraged to visit some of their permanent outdoor exhibits including a memorial garden featuring plaques dedicated to fallen submariners as well as bronze sculptures of heroic sailors from both World Wars. There is also an interactive children’s playground featuring replicas of different submarines that kids can climb aboard and explore themselves.
The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park is open year-round and welcomes both locals and visitors alike with daily admission prices starting at just $12 per adult (ages 13+) and $7 per child (ages 6-12).
