Queen Emma Tower Honolulu
The Queen Emma Tower, also known as the Pink Palace, is a historic building located in downtown Honolulu, Hawaii. The tower was built in 1857 by King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma as a private residence for the royal family. In 1885, the Hawaiian government purchased the property and it became the executive building for the Kingdom of Hawaii. After the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893, the building was used as the executive building for the Provisional Government of Hawaii and later the Republic of Hawaii. From 1898 to 1903, it served as the official residence of US military governors of Hawaii. In 1922, the government leased the property to Bishop Estate, which used it as an office building. In 1986, the tower was renovated and turned into a hotel.
The Queen Emma Tower is one of the most recognizable buildings in Honolulu. The five-story pink structure is located in downtown Honolulu at Punchbowl and Beretania streets. It was built in 1857 by King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma as a private summer residence for the royal family. The name "Queen Emma" comes from Queen Emma's role in securing the lease of Puʻukoholā Heiau from Maui chief Hoapiliwahine (which helped save it from being demolished).
In 1886, following King Kalākaua's death, Lunalilo's ascension to the throne, and Queen Kapiolani's
