The Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii is a historic site commemorating the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. On December 7th 1941, Japanese naval forces launched a surprise air assault on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, killing more than 2,400 Americans and sinking four battleships.
The memorial consists of two sites: One located on the harbor's east side known as the USS Arizona Memorial , and the other situated on Ford Island in the center of the harbor, which includes the USS Oklahoma Memorial and a visitor center with exhibits and displays depicting the events of that fateful day.
Visitors are welcome to explore both sites. The USS Arizona Memorial sits atop an underwater grave that was created when oil from its sunken hull began to seep into the ocean floor. It is one of America’s most visited WWII memorials and one of Hawaii’s top tourist destinations. The memorial features interpretive displays and exhibits about World War II history as well as artifacts from battleships that were destroyed during the attack such as helmets, guns, ammunition boxes and even unexploded torpedoes.
At Ford Island visitors can explore exhibits about Japan’s involvement in World War II, including their overall strategy for attacking Pearl Harbor, what life was like for those who lived through it and more. Visitors can also learn about some of America’s greatest heroes who risked their lives to save others during this terrifying event. The USS Oklahoma Memorial honors those who died aboard her decks while other monuments honor sailors and Marines who lost their lives defending our nation during this period of history.
Pearl Harbor National Memorial serves as a reminder to all Americans of a time in our country's history that must never be forgotten nor repeated again. Visitors may take part in guided tours or self-guided audio tours at both sites; each tour gives an insightful look into our nation's incredible past with stories about courage and sacrifice that will never be forgotten by future generations to come.
