The trail winds around the crater and offers a great workout with some stunning sights along the way. The trail has been there since before World War II and was once used to transport supplies from the harbor to military bases up in the hills.
Today, it is a great place for casual hikers who are looking for an easy hike with beautiful views along the way. The trailhead is equiped with picnic tables, restrooms and water fountains so you can stop to rest or have a snack while enjoying the view. It's also a great place to take photos as you wind up towards Koko Head summit where you can get amazing panoramic views of Waikiki Beach and Maunalua Bay below.
The entire trip takes about two hours depending on how fast you go and how frequently you stop to take pictures or enjoy the view. If you don't fancy climbing all the way up to Koko Head summit then there’s still plenty to explore along the way such as Old China Wall, an ancient fortification that dates back hundreds of years or Kohelepelepe Falls which are perfect for cooling off after your long climb up to Koko Head summit.
All in all, this short hike offers spectacular scenery, incredible views and plenty of exciting things to discover - making it well worth visiting if you’re ever in Honolulu!
