Kapiʻolani Regional Park is an expansive outdoor oasis located on the south shore of Honolulu, Hawaii. Spanning 78 acres and encompassing nearly a mile of coastline, the park is one of the most popular destinations for outdoor recreation in the city. Kapiʻolani offers a wide range of activities and amenities to visitors, including hiking trails, camping spots, beachfront access, picnic areas, and more. The park also features a manmade lake fed by rain runoff from nearby Mount Ka'ala.
Kapiʻolani Park takes its name from Queen Kapiʻolani who reigned in the late 19th century. In honor of her legacy, the park has been carefully maintained since it opened in 1895 as Waikiki's first public park. Many of its original buildings can still be seen today such as a bandstand from 1919 and two pavilions from 1899. The grounds are filled with large mature trees that were planted during Kapiʻolani's reign providing plenty of shade for those seeking respite from hot Hawaiian days.
The park's sandy beachfront is perfect for swimming and sunbathing, while a variety of water sports can be found further away at Kewalo Basin Harbour. Visitors can also explore Diamond Head crater or take part in canoe rides around Maunalua Bay which offers breathtaking views of Oahu’s eastern shoreline.
In addition to its natural attractions and recreational activities, Kapiʻolani Regional Park is also home to Honolulu Zoo which houses over 900 animals representing mammals, birds, reptiles and marine life native to Hawaii and other parts of the world. There are also several museums onsite including Waikiki Aquarium which focuses on marine life with hands-on exhibits and educational programs. Every Saturday night you will find crowds gather around Waikiki Shell for concerts held beneath the stars or watching hula performances beneath swaying palm trees at Kapiolani Bandstand Plaza.
Kapiolani Regional Park provides hours upon hours of fun and relaxation for people looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life in Honolulu making this one destination that should not be missed when visiting Hawaii!
