Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge, Holmes Beach, FL

Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge in Holmes Beach, Florida is a protected area that was initially created to protect the endangered seabirds and sea turtles of the region. The refuge’s coastal location makes it an important sanctuary for a diverse range of wildlife species, including osprey, brown pelicans, gulls, terns, migratory shorebirds, and wintering waterfowl. The island also functions as a vital rookery for several threatened and endangered species such as loggerhead sea turtles, green sea turtles and Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtles.

The Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1974 when the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) acquired 807 acres of land on Egmont Key. The area provides protection for more than just birds and sea turtles – other species that inhabit the refuge include bottlenose dolphins, marine mammals such as the manatee, gopher tortoises, diamondback terrapins, rhesus macaque monkeys (introduced to the island by shipwrecked sailors long ago), snakes, lizards, amphibians and several other reptiles.

The refuge is open to visitors who can enjoy its unspoiled beaches and trails through upland scrub forests or along the shoreline. Visitors should keep an eye out for white-tailed deer which are often seen on the island. There are three docks located on Egmont Key which can be accessed only by boat or ferry service from St Petersburg; fishing is popular throughout most areas of the refuge but special regulations apply in certain nesting areas.

The fish and wildlife populations of Egmont Key are monitored regularly by FWS biologists who strive to protect these key species from disturbance by recreational boaters and fishermen. The Island is also home to one of Florida’s oldest lighthouses which serves as a reminder of its rich maritime history. With so much natural beauty to explore it's no wonder why Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge has become one of Florida’s premier tourist destinations!
