Zion Chapel of Ease is located in the picturesque town of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. This historic chapel dates back to 1680 and is one of the oldest surviving places of worship in the United States. Its unique architecture and surrounding landscape make it a popular tourist attraction for locals and visitors alike.
The chapel was once part of a larger parish church known as St Peter's Church, which served as the primary place of worship for Anglicans living on Hilton Head Island. The original building was destroyed during the Revolutionary War, but its foundations remain today. After its destruction, a new structure, nicknamed "Zion Chapel" was built around 1797 on top of these original foundations. The building was designed with a classical-style front façade complete with four columns and two doors leading into a small interior room that could accommodate up to 100 people.
Although the building has been restored several times since its construction, much of its original features are still intact today. These include two stained glass windows, an old pipe organ and several memorials dedicated to prominent members of Hilton Head’s past community who were buried in the chapel's graveyard. Inside Zion Chapel there are also many historical artifacts that help tell the story of this early religious establishment including old Bibles, photographs and artifacts from when it originally served as St Peter's Church.
Today Zion Chapel is still used as an active place of worship by many denominations throughout South Carolina, although it generally only hosts services three times per year for special occasions such as Easter or Christmas Day. In addition to being a popular place for locals to gather together for prayer and reflection, Zion Chapel can also be rented out for weddings or other special events due to its beautiful setting and rich history.
Located near Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island’s southern tip, Zion Chapel is situated in an area that enjoys a subtropical climate so it can be enjoyed year round by visitors from all over the world who come to appreciate its beauty and significance in local history.
