The Stoney Baynard Ruins in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is an archaeological site located on the northern end of Hilton Head Island. The ruins are believed to have been constructed between the early 1700s and 1870s by a local plantation family and members of the Gullah community.
These ruins provide a glimpse into the past of the Lowcountry region, where African Americans and Europeans worked together to create a rich cultural landscape. Though much of the original structures of Stoney Baynard have deteriorated over time, there are still remnants that remain today. These ruins include two chimneys and several stone foundations, along with other artifacts such as pottery sherds, iron nails, and glass fragments.
In 2020, archaeologists from the Coastal Discovery Museum began excavations at Stoney Baynard in order to uncover more information about its history. From their excavations they found numerous artifacts that suggest that this was once a busy area. They discovered evidence of what appears to be an early 19th century kitchen as well as a complex network of agricultural fields which were likely used for growing crops like corn and rice. Additionally, other artifacts included brick fragments from two large brick ovens that may have been used for making bread or pastry products such as biscuits or muffins.
The Stoney Baynard Ruins serves as an important reminder of Hilton Head’s long history filled with diverse cultures working together in harmony. It also provides insight into how African Americans adapted to their new environment, using available resources to create something meaningful together with their European counterparts. As one of only a handful of known archaeological sites on Hilton Head Island, Stoney Baynard Ruins is sure to draw interest from both locals and tourists looking to explore its fascinating past.
