Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park on Hilton Head Island is a living remembrance of the first self-governed freedmen's town in the post-Civil War era United States. Established by Union Gen. Ormsby M. Mitchel in 1862, Mitchelville was home to over 2,000 former African-American slaves and refugees from other parts of the South who had taken refuge with the Union forces at Port Royal during the Civil War. The town was extremely progressive for its day, with schools, churches, a hospital, and even an elected mayor and governing body.
Today, Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park stands as a reminder to what was accomplished by African Americans so soon after emancipation. Located on an oceanfront site near Fish Haul Creek, the park is home to both a museum and interpretive center that tell stories about life in Mitchelville through interactive exhibits and guided tours. Visitors can also explore Mitchellville’s streets by walking through reconstructed slave cabins and other buildings that were once part of this pioneering community.
The museum at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park also features artifacts uncovered during archaeological digs that give insight into daily life in the town such as tools used for farming, clothing items worn by residents, written documents detailing laws of settlement, and religious items used in worship services. In addition to educational programs documented at the museum and interpretive center, visitors can also learn more about Mitchellville’s fascinating history during special events throughout the year including musical performances celebrating African-American culture as well as living history reenactments bringing Mitchelville’s legacy to life with authentic costumes and activities from 1862.
In addition to its cultural significance for African Americans today, Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park serves as an important reminder of how far society has come since emancipation. It is not only a vital link to America’s past but also a landmark representing freedom for future generations to come.
