Fort Mitchel in Hilton Head Island is a historic site that offers visitors the chance to explore a piece of the Lowcountry’s past. Located on the north end of the island, Fort Mitchel is an earthen fort constructed in 1862 as part of an extensive defensive system built by the Confederates to protect their port city. Originally named Fort Howell , this fort was one of three that defended Hilton Head and its surrounding areas. It was renamed Fort Mitchel after General Ormsby Mitchell who had served under General Robert E. Lee during the Civil War and was killed in battle at Chickamauga, Georgia in 1863.
Today, Fort Mitchel is a popular tourist destination for those wanting to get a glimpse into Hilton Head's rich history. Visitors can walk through the remains of old fortifications and imagine what life would have been like over 150 years ago when Confederate soldiers were defending their homeland from Union forces. The site includes several cannons, walls and various artifacts from the period and offers a unique look into Civil War era coastal defense construction techniques.
The nearby Wells Park is also home to some interesting archaeology from the time period, with foundations from old buildings like slave quarters still visible onsite. There are several interpretive signs along well-maintained trails that give visitors further insight into this captivating historical area. Additionally, there are many opportunities for bird watching around Fort Mitchel’s wetlands, making it a great spot for locals and tourists alike looking to explore nature and learn more about Hilton Head’s past all at once!
