The Baynard Plantation Ruins on Hilton Head Island are the remains of a once-thriving plantation that was destroyed by Union troops during the Civil War. The plantation was owned by Dr. John Baynard, a wealthy doctor from Charleston, and his wife, Sarah. The couple had four children: two sons and two daughters.

The plantation was a self-sufficient community, with its own crops, livestock, and slaves. The slaves were housed in a separate quarters on the property and worked the fields. They were also responsible for all the household chores, such as cooking and cleaning.

The Baynards were a wealthy family and lived a life of luxury. They often entertained guests at their plantation home, which was one of the largest on the island.

The Civil War changed everything for the Baynards. Dr. Baynard died of a heart attack in 1862, just as Union troops were about to invade Hilton Head Island. Sarah and her children fled to Charleston, leaving everything behind.

When Union troops arrived at the plantation, they set fire to the house and all the outbuildings. The only thing that remained standing was the slave quarters.

Today, all that is left of the Baynard Plantation are ruins. The foundation of the main house is still visible, as well as some of the walls of the outbuildings. The slave quarters are also still standing and have been restored. They are now part of a museum that
