Lake Granby is the largest and deepest body of water in Grand County, Colorado. Located near the city of Granby and surrounded by majestic Rocky Mountains, it spans 8,280 acres with an average depth of 65 feet and a maximum depth of 170 feet. The lake is fed by the headwaters of the Colorado River on its northern shore and has two main arms: Shadow Mountain Reservoir and Grand Lake.
The lake was created through dam building in 1947 to provide irrigation water for surrounding farms and ranches. It also serves as part of the Colorado-Big Thompson project, supplying hydroelectric power for nearby communities. Since then, it has developed into a recreational paradise. Visitors can enjoy boating, swimming, fishing, camping, picnicking and a variety of wildlife watching activities from its shores or from one of several public access points along its length.
One popular feature is Lonetree Point Beach located at the north end where visitors can take part in a variety of activities such as sailing, stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking along with fishing for trout or kokanee salmon. There are also ample opportunities for enjoying other water sports such as wakeboarding or waterskiing throughout most of the year due to favorable winds blowing across the lake's surface.
In addition to offering recreation opportunities, Lake Granby provides refuge to many species of fish including rainbow trout, brown trout , cutthroat trout , kokanee salmon , yellow perch , northern pike , walleye , largemouth bass , smallmouth bass and crappie . Some areas around the lake have been designated as trophy areas where most fish are protected from overfishing. Each year there are fishing tournaments held on Lake Granby that attract anglers from all over Colorado hoping to snag some trophies while they’re here!
The lake is also home to several species of migratory birds that come each spring to nest and feed around its edges including bald eagles, herons and pelicans among others. Migratory geese also flock into its waters during fall migration providing another source of entertainment for visitors who love bird watching activity.
Overall Lake Granby is truly an outdoor enthusiast's paradise offering plenty of recreational opportunities whether you're looking for fun on land or water!
