The Grand Lake Area Historical Society in Granby, Colorado is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the rich history of the area. Founded in 1981 by a group of local citizens, its mission is to provide an understanding and appreciation of the past through education and research. Since its inception, the society has been collecting and preserving artifacts, photographs, documents, books, newspapers and other materials throughout Grand County that represent its past.
Each year, the society hosts several events with topics ranging from "Ranching Tales" to "Life on Grand Lake." Additionally, they host lectures exploring specific aspects of local history such as mining life in 1940s. As part of their commitment to education about local history, the society also offers classes for adults and children like quilt-making or blacksmithing.
In addition to events and classes, the historical society also offers tours for visitors who wish to learn more about Granby's past. These guided tours give visitors a comprehensive overview of some of Granby's oldest homes. The tour will often start at the Elkhorn Lodge which was built in 1890 by William Wallace Faunce and his wife Emma as a tourist destination for people coming into town by train or stagecoach. From there, visitors will be taken to locations like Montezuma Street where they will see many historic homes that were originally built during the late 1800s when Granby first became established as a settlement town.
The Grand Lake Area Historical Society continues to carry out its mission today by encouraging citizens of all ages to learn more about their community’s past through activities such as artifact preservation and restoration projects or even simple backyard archaeology digs around Granby’s old homesteads. Furthermore, they are constantly striving towards furthering their educational outreach both within and outside of Granby’s community including hosting field trips for students from K - 12 schools nearby so that future generations can understand what life was like before smartphones and computers!
