The Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park was established in 2011 with the goal of preserving the area’s natural beauty and cultural significance while providing educational opportunities for local youth and adults alike. The park encompasses two distinct areas: the Lake Sylvia Community Conservation Area (LSCA) which features five mangrove islands surrounded by seagrass beds; and the mangrove marshland known as the Eula Johnson Estuary Preserve (JEP). Within these two areas, visitors can find numerous species of birds including pelicans, sandpipers, ospreys, white ibis, egrets, herons and many more shorebirds which make their homes here year round or are just passing through during migration season.
In addition to its many feathered inhabitants, Dr. Von D Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park is also home to several other animals such as bobcats, opossums and armadillos who live in the surrounding wetlands or can be seen occasionally crossing one of the many trails throughout the park. For those looking for something off trail there are plenty of opportunities to explore around small coves where mangroves line sandy beaches or even venture out further into Deerfield Island Park where some rare species like crocodiles have been spotted sunning themselves on the banks nearby!
