Soldier monument, Flushing, NY
The Soldier Monument located in Queens is an important monument, not just for the people of Queens but for all Americans. The monument, which stands in front of the Queens County Courthouse and Hall of Records, honors those who have served their country in times of war. It was erected in 1914 by the members of the Queer Veteran’s Organization with funds donated by local citizens. The Soldiers Monument serves as a reminder of our nation’s rich military history and sacrifices made by men and women throughout our nation’s past wars.
The monument is a striking piece of architecture standing 18 feet tall atop an impressive granite base designed in a classical style and featuring four marble soldiers that represent each branch of service: army, navy, marines and coast guard. Carved into the solid granite are inscriptions honoring those who gave their lives while serving in World War I or any other major conflict since then.
At its center stands the iconic statue of Victory, holding aloft a laurel wreath to signify both victory over adversity and remembrance to those who gave their lives for our country. The statue was crafted from bronze and coated with green patina to protect it from corrosion.
At night, the monument is illuminated to bring special attention to its presence among other memorials located on the grounds around it such as the Vietnam Memorial Wall and an Honor Roll dedicated to all New Yorkers who served during World War II. Located nearby is also a memorial garden featuring seating areas surrounded by shrubs, trees, flower gardens and memorial plaques inscribed with names of fallen heroes from all branches of service.
The Soldier Monument stands today as a testament to honor those brave men and women who have given so much for our freedom. It serves as a reminder that we must never forget nor take for granted all that has been sacrificed so we may enjoy our freedoms today.
