The Twin Arrows Trading Post Ruins are a historic landmark located off of Route 66 in Flagstaff, Arizona. The trading post was founded in 1921 by brothers and Navajo Code Talkers, William and Thomas Wilson. Originally the trading post served as an exchange point between Native Americans, who were allowed to camp there and trade goods, such as blankets and jewelry, with other traders.
In 1931 the trading post became an integral part of the new U.S. Highway 66 which had just been opened that same year, running all the way from Chicago to Los Angeles. It quickly grew popular among travelers on this iconic highway and became a regular stop for motorists needing a break from their long journey. The ruins today still offer a glimpse into what it was like for travelers in this era when the highway was in its prime.
The Twin Arrows Trading Post was eventually abandoned after World War II when the new Interstate 40 replaced much of Route 66, leaving many small roadside businesses behind to become extinct. In 2002 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in order to protect its cultural and historical significance to Flagstaff’s heritage.
Today visitors can still take a trip down memory lane at the Twin Arrows Trading Post Ruins and discover some of their own stories within its walls. The ruins remain an important part of Flagstaff's culture as well as that of Route 66 itself and remain one of many great attractions along this legendary highway. From here one can take in views of surrounding landmarks, such as Meteor Crater or even venture into nearby townships for some truly authentic experiences from days gone by.
