Riordan Mansion State Historic Park in Flagstaff , Arizona, offers visitors a glimpse of the luxurious lifestyle enjoyed by wealthy industrialists in the early 20th century. The mansion was originally built for brothers Michael and Timothy Riordan, two leading entrepreneurs of Flagstaff’s lumber industry. Owned by Arizona Parks and Recreation Department since 1965, the estate consists of two distinct structures: the large Main House and a smaller Guest House. Both were designed by influential architect Charles Whittlesey in a rustic Arts and Crafts style popular at that time.
The Main House is an impressive two-story structure comprised of seven bedrooms plus a sleeping porch, five bathrooms, grand dining room with seating for 15 guests, library, billiard room and various other rooms elaborately decorated with handcrafted furniture and original artwork. Exterior features such as expansive covered porches, flagstone patios and terraces capture spectacular views of the nearby San Francisco Peaks mountain range. The park also includes the Guest House which was built in 1920 to accommodate visits from relatives and important business associates.
Visitors to Riordan Mansion State Historic Park can take guided tours of both homes throughout the year where they will learn about Flagstaff’s earliest days as well as details on how the Riordan family lived during their time there. In addition to tours, educational programs are held onsite that focus on aspects such as Native American history and culture, conservation ethics and ancient astronomical sites like to those found nearby at Wupatki National Monument . Riordan Mansion is also often used for special events such as weddings and receptions due to its picturesque setting with views of Mount Elden across from the estate.
