Flagstaff, Arizona is home to three unique National Monuments. These monuments are all located within a short distance of each other, making them an excellent destination for a day trip or longer vacation. The first of the monuments is Walnut Canyon National Monument . This monument contains 600-year old cliff dwellings from the Sinagua people and is located just east of Flagstaff. Visitors can explore the canyon and tour the ruins, which offer stunning views from atop limestone cliffs. The second monument is Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument , which was created in 1930 to preserve an extinct cinder cone volcano and its surrounding landscape. Although no trails exist in this area due to its fragile geology, visitors can still get an up-close view of the crater by driving along a seven-mile loop road that climbs 500 feet above sea level. Lastly, Wupatki National Monument features the remains of ancient Native American dwellings, including over 20 pueblo structures scattered around 35 square miles of desert land northeast of Flagstaff. Among these structures are two great houses made from stones that were laid without mortar and joined together with mud plaster. These ancient homes were built between 1100 and 1250 AD by native tribes that used what little resources were available to them in order to survive in such a harsh environment. Visitors can explore these ruins as well as take guided tours offered by park rangers who provide detailed information about the sites' histories and cultural significance. From mysterious dwellings carved into limestone cliffs to ancient architectural marvels standing in a windswept desert, visitors will find plenty of exciting things to discover at Flagstaff Area's three incredible national monuments!
