For the months of June, July, August and September visitors to Estes Park can experience a unique part of Rocky Mountain National Park’s history at the Historic Fall River Hydroplant. Located near the entrance to the park, it was built in 1909 to provide electricity for Estes Park’s hotels and businesses. Tours are available during those months at 1, 2, and 3 PM and offer a great opportunity to learn about this incredible piece of engineering project that has been in operation for over 100 years.
The hydroplant is comprised of a powerhouse building with two large generators, an upper reservoir or head pool, a lower reservoir or tail pool and several miles of canals connecting them. The water is then directed through penstocks between the reservoirs which turn turbines inside the powerhouse that generate electricity. This system was particularly important as it provided power when other sources were not available yet during its time. In addition to providing power for local businesses, it also provided enough electricity for some residential housing in town at the time.
Tour guides will lead you on an informative journey explaining how this early technology works and why it was so important then as well as today. Visitors will learn about how engineers designed the system to use gravity since Estes Park is located on top of a mountain. They will explain each part of the plant from intake gates and pipes at one end of the canal to outlet valves on the other side where water exits back into Fall River after powering turbines inside of the station’s generator room.
In addition to gaining historical perspective from knowledgeable tour guides, visitors can also observe some significant changes in technology while visiting this hydroplant such as computerized controls that replaced manual labor and modern safety systems used by operators today compared to what was seen during its earlier days in operation.
Come take a tour of Historic Fall River Hydroplant this summer season in Estes Park to learn more about this incredible engineering feat that has been operating since 1909!
