On June 6, 1883, the first Union Station in Erie , Pennsylvania opened its doors. The station was designed by architect Henry Hobson Richardson and was constructed of red brick with stone trim. The building housed three waiting rooms, a ticket office, and a telegraph office. The Erie Railroad Company operated the station until 1966 when it was purchased by the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad Company. The station was used as a passenger rail service until 1971 when it was closed.
The station remained abandoned until 2006 when a group of local investors purchased the property with the intention of restoring it. The restoration process is still ongoing, but the station has already been transformed into a vibrant community space. The ground floor now houses a number of businesses, including a cafe, a barbershop, and a florist. The upper floors are being leased out as office space and apartments.
The restored Union Station is a beautiful example of adaptive reuse. It is just one example of the many ways that historic buildings can be given new life in contemporary times.
