The Tabor House Museum in Ellijay, Georgia is a wonderful place to step back in time and gain an appreciation for the area’s local history. Located on Main Street, the museum is housed in a building that was formerly the Gilmer County Jail, which operated from 1885 until 1988. Numerous artifacts are on display within the museum, including antique tools and farm implements, furniture, artwork, photographs and documents that highlight the region’s past. Visitors can also explore outside of the main building and take a stroll around the grounds to see artifacts such as a replica of the original jail cells and early 20th century fire engines. Inside the museum there are several rotating exhibits about topics such as Civil War history, African American heritage and more. The Tabor House Museum also offers educational programs for children to learn about local history and culture through hands-on activities and guided tours. Furthermore, special events like lectures by visiting authors or historians are hosted at the museum throughout the year.
