The Gilmer County Historical Society, located in Ellijay, Georgia, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Gilmer County. Founded in 1975, the organization works to preserve and promote the county's rich past by collecting, preserving, interpreting and presenting artifacts related to its history. From its humble beginnings as a small group of local historians who sought to record and share their knowledge about the area's culture and history, the Historical Society has grown into a vital part of Gilmer County's heritage.
The Society offers a variety of programs and activities for visitors to explore Gilmer County’s diverse heritage. These include lectures from local historians who share stories about influential figures from years gone by; tours that highlight unique places; special events that commemorate important anniversaries or historical moments; exhibits featuring collections from community members; educational programs for students of all ages; and much more. The Society also maintains a library filled with books about local history for researchers to explore. In addition, they operate a museum showcasing artifacts related to life in Gilmer County dating as far back as pre-statehood days.
