The Clyfford Still Museum of Denver is an incredible repository of the works of this important and influential American abstract expressionist artist. Located in the bustling heart of Downtown Denver , the museum offers visitors a chance to explore the life and work of one of the most influential artists in modern art history. The museum possesses more than 2,400 paintings, drawings, prints and other works created by Still in his lifetime. The institution was founded in 2004, when Clyfford Still's widow Patricia donated his entire estate to the city to form a public collection devoted solely to her husband's work.
The building itself stands as a masterwork of modern architecture. Located on a city block that is bordered by 12th Avenue, Acoma Street and Broadway Boulevard, it was designed by Brad Cloepfil of Allied Works Architecture who sought to create an intimate environment for viewing artwork without being overpowering. Its exterior features white walls which are punctuated by vertical strips of wood creating a pattern reminiscent of abstract paintings made by Still himself. Inside its galleries are illuminated with natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows which yield incredible views over Denver’s skyline.
The collection itself consists mainly of works produced between 1929 and 1979, including some pieces believed to be unseen since they were last exhibited during World War II. Visitors can observe Still’s evolution as an artist through his pieces on display at the museum; from Social Realism to Cubism and Abstract Expressionism. Many series are also present including “1944N” – Still's series created during World War II – alongside selections from his other major series such as “1950M” and “1951A-B” which highlight his later phase as he transitioned into abstract expressionism.
In addition to being home to an impressive collection, The Clyfford Still Museum also hosts educational lectures for visitors ranging from children's programs to adult-focused seminars about different aspects of interpreting artworks within their historical contexts. With its engaging exhibits and inspiring educational programming, this unique cultural institution serves as both a testament to Clyfford Still's legacy and a celebration of art appreciation for all ages in Denver!
